That’s your name and not only is that your name, but it would easily become the one name that would give me the hardest time. Saying that name always tripped up my throat, slowly travelled down my esophagus, and eventually made its way to punch my heart.
We met when we were 12 years old. And it was at that age when you became a particular person in my life.
We were close friends to the age of 14 until you moved away. You were 2,067 miles away from me. And with that distance, our friendship slowly started to dissipate. We survived with a few conversations on MySpace and Facebook, but you had your own life and I had to go with mine.
Today, I stand at the age of 19 and occasionally we’ll message each other on Facebook for 10 minutes and not a second more. However, still to this day when I hear your name and when I see your name, I can’t help my heart from the flame.
You and I never dated. We never hugged, we never held hands, we never kissed, we never were a couple, we never got engaged, and we never got married. We never had the chance to become “us”. And even though you and I only carried a limited amount of conversations and only got to share a couple of moments, those memories are still very much alive.
Whether you know this or not, you’re of great significance to me everyday.
You gleamed in such a way that every time I looked at you, I couldn’t help but crack a smile. You always laughed with a big smile and while you laughed you would do this thing where you covered your face with your hand because you were embarrassed about how obnoxious you smiled. You were always so passionate about different foods. You were always intense when it came to sports. You found peace by playing piano. You weren’t shy. You always knew what you wanted and never hesitated about your decisions. You had no regrets. You were so selective of your words every time you spoke. You hated being wrong. You accepted people for who they were. You were just being you. And I knew I was just being me when I figured out that I loved you.
Despite the few conversations we had the past 5 years and the fact that we’re 2,067 miles apart and that we haven’t seen each other since we were 14, there isn’t a day that goes by where my heart forgets you.
And though you’re still miles and miles and miles away, I know, one day, love will find a way.
